Small Hydro Turbine Generator Unit
Its mainly used in rural place or other place where grid not available easily.
Water source selectionGenerally, the small hydro electric power plant is located at the place with water height difference, where the water in small river can be collected to turbine unit in the power plant by inlet pipe, and the runner of turbine unit will be pushed by water flow to drive generator and generate electricity. So, before installation of small hydro electric power plant the water head and flow rate of water source must be /confirm/ied, then the power capacity of turbine unite can be calculated based on it.
Water head measurement
Gross water head means the vertical height difference between upstream and downstream of water source, which can be measured by the following methods generally.
1. It can be measured by pressure meter installed at the end of pipe, the pressure value measured after closing valve is gross water head.
2. Measure the water level difference between upstream and downstream by level gauge.
3. Measure by such technology method as GPS.
Net water head, means the pressure which can be applied by turbine unit effectively.
It can be measured by open the valve, where the pressure value showed on the pressure meter of inlet pipe during turbine working is net water head.
Flow rate measurement
1,Section area
Flow rate is section area by flow speed, and the section area A of water channel can be calculated by measuring width and depth of it. For more accurate measurement, the section area of water channel can be divided into small piece, measure the area of small pieces and then add them to get the total one.
Measurement of flow speed, a piece of float goods can be throw on the water surface and measure the movement of it in a fixed period to calculate the movement in one second, which is the flow speed.
2,Volume method
Collect water by a water tank, measure the time t needed to fill the tank, weight the water inside the water tank W, and the flow rate Q can be got by W/t.
The flow rate should be measured for many times to get average value, beside that, the flow rate changing in different season should also be taken into consideration.

Runoff turbine unit was composed by turbine and generator, which was connected by coupling. The turbine was mainly composed by spiral case, runner, main shaft, seal, suspend frame, bearing and so on parts. During working, the flow will enter into spiral case from inlet pipe to entrance of turbine with the force of working water head to lash the runner, then the generator will work correspondingly by the driven of main shaft.
There are two kinds of generator as permanent type and excitation type. The rotator of permanent generator is made by permanent magnet material, the general used ones are ferrite and rubidiumIron boron. Where the latter one has higher efficiency and longer service time. Excitation generator is divided into brush excitation and brushless excitation, where the brush excitation generator need to change carbon brush regularly. The excitation generator has excitation system that no additional device need to be added for electricity generation. .
