1. Why Making Rice Bran Oil?
- In the process of rice processing, the two most valuable materials are rice and rice bran. In recent years, due to the low profit margin in the process of rice processing, another valuable rice bran has attracted more and more attention of rice milling enterprises.
At present, the vast majority of rice bran oil is not used as oil resources, and a large number of rice bran oil is used as animal feed, causing great waste.
- Rice bran is a mixture of rice epidermis, embryo, rice bran and starch. For every 100 kg of rice processed, about 10 kg of rice bran can be produced.
- Rich oil content in rice bran: 15-22% depend on different rice variety, at the same time, the oil content of Parboiled rice bran is 6% - 10% higher than that of common white rice bran.
2. Economic Value Of Rice Bran Oil Extraction In Rice Mills
Processing 100 tons of rice will get 10 tons of rice bran. If rice bran is sold directly, it will be sold at the price of 0.2USD/ kg, total 2000USD of 10tons rice bran.
The vertical hydraulic press method of rice bran is used to press the oil. Each shift processes 10 tons of rice bran. The output of rice bran oil is 1.1 tons. The crude oil of rice bran is sold at 1USD/ kg, which is equivalent to 1100 USD. At the same time, the output of rice bran cake is 8.7 tons (including 2% loss), which is sold at 0.25USD/ kg, which is equivalent to 2175USD. The production cost of processing 10 tons of rice bran oil is about 200USD, which is equivalent to the recovery amount (1100 +2175 - 200 = 3075USD totally.
The gross profit (3075-2000=1075) of 1075USD can be increased by processing 10 tons of rice bran in each shift through vertical hydraulic pressing of rice bran.
3. Advantage To Build A Bran Oil Extraction Plant In Rice Mills
Less investment: a 100 ton scale rice plant will be built with a 24 press vertical hydraulic oil pressing production line processing 10 tons of rice bran per shift. The equipment investment in the workshop will be about 120,000USD; the workshop area will be about 210 square meters; the equipment investment cost recovery days for single shift production every day will be 120,000 ÷ 300 = 400 days.
Low cost: no need for expansion treatment and rice bran transportation; no three wastes treatment; less maintenance cost and convenient replacement; low power consumption, about 180 kwh per ton of oil; production cost of only 200USD per ton of crude bran oil, mainly wage cost.
Good safety: flexible production organization and management; no environmental pollution; no high temperature, high pressure, flammable and explosive hazards.
Good oil quality: the oleic acid value of crude bran is low when it is pressed on the new bran, and the acid value is about 10 mg; the oil color is good, the refining consumption is low, and the price of crude bran oil is relatively the highest.
High profit: processing 10 tons of rice bran per shift and producing 1.1 tons of crude bran oil can increase the gross profit by about 600USD per shift.
4. The Method Of Bran Oil Extraction
There are two method to make bran oil from rice bran:
I. solvent extraction method:
Solvent oil

Rice bran → cleaning → extruding (pelleting) → leaching → mixed oil → evaporation → stripping → crude bran oil ↓
Bran meal←desolvation←wet meal
Advantages:
high oil production rate; low residual oil rate, about 1%; large processing capacity.
Disadvantages:↓
- high cost of investment, processing and three wastes discharge treatment;
-- need the support of foreign rice bran sources and perfect rice bran preservation system;
- unable to start or stop production frequently;
- rice bran needs to be granulated or extruded to keep fresh, which results in high energy consumption;
- high management level and strict safety requirements;
II. Hydraulic press Method
Rice bran → cleaning → steaming and frying → making cakes → pre pressing → pressing → precipitation → filtration → crude bran oil ↓
Chaff cake
Advantages:
- low energy consumption, with an installed capacity of 14 kW for 24 oil presses, half of which are standby and do not need expansion;
- less investment, easy to be matched with rice plant, low processing cost, no waste treatment;
- simple operation, easy to learn, easy to hold, low maintenance cost and convenient replacement;
Disadvantages:
the oil production rate is lower than that of extraction, the residual oil rate in the bran cake is 3 - 5%, and the labor intensity is relatively large.
5. Processing Technology Of Rice Bran Oil Vertical Press:

5.1. Bran cleaning: to remove broken rice, rice tip and other impurities from rice bran air separation and screening.
5.2. Steaming and frying: the process of rice bran being cooked by adding water (moistening), heating (steaming) and removing water (frying).
5.3. Bran cake making: The qualified rice bran after steaming and frying can be gathered into a round cake shape through the hydraulic pressure cake making machine. It is equipped with a pie ring and a pie plate.
5.4. Pressing: shaping and further compaction to prevent skew pressing.
5.5. Pressing: After the bran cake is loaded into the oil press, it can be divided into three processes: low pressure and fast pressure, high pressure and slow pressure, and oil filtering.
5.6. precipitation and filtration: through oil sink tank, oil filter tank, oil clarify tank and oil pump to get cleaned crude bran oil.
Packing Delivery
First, the brown rice is fed to rice polisher through screw head. the surface of the rice grain is polished by friction under a certain pressure and temperature. Through the polishing treatment, not only the floating surface of the rice grain can be cleared, but also the starch is pregelatinized and gelatinized on the surface of the rice starch, and the starch gelatinization makes up for cracks, thereby obtaining the smooth appearance, improving the storage life of the rice, therefore polished rice is very necessary.
