Estradiol or oestradiol (American or British English usages), derives from estra-, Gk. οστρο? (oistros, literally meaning "verve or inspiration") and -diol, achemical name and suffix indicating that this form of steroid and sex hormone is atype of alcohol bearing two hydroxyl groups.
