Rockwool, also called mineral, rock, or slag wool, is one of the most popular growing mediums in hydroponics operations due to its versatility and water retention characteristics.
It is manufactured from melting basaltic rock and spinning the molten rock into fibers. After spinning, a binder is added to the fibers and they are compressed and cured into large slabs, which can be later cut up into convenient sizes and shapes. This process changes the functional properties of the basaltic rock to make the final substance an exceptional substrate for water and air exchange. This process is also the main reason that rockwool is considered synthetic.
Horticultural Rockwool growing media is primarily available in two general formats. First, as rigid slabs, blocks, and cubes known as "bonded" products because the fibers are held together with a "gluing" or binding agent which renders them stiff and brittle. This is the primary format for the vegetable and cut flower industries. Secondly, rockwool is available as a highly refined and consistent hydrophilic or hydrophobic granulate which is basically water absorbent or water repellent. This format can be used as a component in various peat moss based soilless media or for ground bed incorporation to improve the tilth of heavy clay or light sandy soils.

Applications of rockwool (Mineral Wool/Rock Wool) include thermal insulation (as both structural insulation and pipe insulation, though it is not as fire-resistant as high-temperature insulation wool), filtration, soundproofing, and hydroponic growth medium.

Rockwool (Mineral Wool/Rock wool) can be engineered to hold large quantities of water and air that aid root growth and nutrient uptake in hydroponics; their fibrous nature also provides a good mechanical structure to hold the plant stable. The naturally high pH of mineral wool makes them initially unsuitable to plant growth and requires "conditioning" to produce a wool with an appropriate, stable pH.

Though the individual fibers conduct heat very well, when pressed into rolls and sheets, their ability to partition air makes them excellent insulators and sound absorbers. Though not immune to the effects of a sufficiently hot fire, the fire resistance of fiberglass, stone wool, and ceramic fibers makes them common building materials when passive fire protection is required, being used as spray fireproofing, in stud cavities in drywall assemblies and as packing materials in firestops.
