ZnS FLIR is used for IR windows and lenses in the thermal band (8 to 14 μm) as a tough front optic in thermal imaging systems, particularly those subjected to harsh environments.
It exhibits high strength and hardness, and good resistance to hostile environments.
It is about one-third harder than Cleartran and about twice as hard as ZnSe.
It does not transmit well in the visible spectral region.
It has the relatively low cost of about two thirds the price of Cleartran or ZnSe.
ZnSe is diamond turnable.
Typeical application:Thermal imaging, FLIR
Products manufactured:Products manufactured: Lenses, Aspheric lenses, Windows, Domes, Wedges
Surface finish:Typical specifications for surface quality in the 3-12μm spectral region are 60-40, 80-50or 120-80 scratch dig depending upon system performance requirements. ZnS regular is diamond turnable.
Surface figure:In the infrared, typical surface figure ranges from 1/2 wave to 2 waves @0.6328 μm depending on the system performance requirements.
AR coating options:Typical available coatings for ZnS include BBAR for the 3 to 5μm and the 8 to 12μm regions. Many other specialized wavelength bands are possible within the 3 to 12μm spectral range.
Zinc Sulphide is produced by synthesis from Zinc vapour and H2S gas, forming as sheets on Graphite susceptors. Zinc Sulphide is microcrystalline in structure, the grain size being controlled to produce maximum strength. Forward Looking Infra-Red (FLIR) grade, which is pale yellow and translucent in the visible, is used as deposited without further treatment. It is stronger than multispectral grade. Single crystal ZnS is available, but is not common.
ZnS oxidises significantly at 300°C, exhibits plastic deformation at about 500°C and dissociates about 700°C. For safety, Zinc Sulphide windows should not be used above 250°C in normal atmosphere.
