Technical mirrors may use a silver, aluminium, or gold coating (the latter typically forinfraredmirrors), and achieve reflectivities of 90-95% when new. A protective transparentovercoat may be applied to preventoxidationof the reflective layer.The simplest optical coatings are thin layers ofmetals, such asaluminium, which are deposited on glass substrates to make mirror surfaces, a process known assilvering. The metal used determines the reflection characteristics of the mirror; aluminium is the cheapest and most common coating, and yields a reflectivity of around 88%-92% over thevisible spectrum. More expensive issilver, which has a reflectivity of 95%-99% even into the farinfrared, but suffers from decreasing reflectivity (<90%) in the blue andultravioletspectral regions. Most expensive isgold, which gives excellent (98%-99%) reflectivity throughout theinfrared, but limited reflectivity at wavelengths shorter than550nm, resulting in the typical gold colour.
