Modern tower packings, as well as the refined design concepts now available, have generated an increasing need to update the technology concerning column internals. No longer are packed columns designed at only one-half their maximum capacity, nor is a 50% safety factor added to the calculated packed depth. In today's competitive environment, the column internals must function as an integral part of the total packed column design, rather than limit the performance of the packing. The most commonly employed column internals are:packing support platesvapor distributorsbed limiters and hold-down platesfeed and reflux distributorsliquid redistributorswall wipersliquid collectors.Not all of these internals are used in every column. in addition, some plates may serve more than one function.
