Citric Acid Monohydrate/AnhydrousProperties:
At room temperature, citric acid is a white crystalline powder. It can exist either in an anhydrous (water-free) form or as a monohydrate. The anhydrous form crystallizes from hot water, whereas the monohydrate forms when citric acid is crystallized from cold water. The monohydrate can be converted to the anhydrous form by heating it above 74 c. Citric acid also dissolves in absolute (anhydrous) ethanol (76 parts of citric acid per 100 parts of ethanol) at 15 degrees celsius. In chemical structure, citric acid shares the properties of other carboxylic acids. A colorless translucent crystalline acid, C6H8O7, principally derived by fermentation of carbohydrates or from lemon, lime, and pineapple juices and used in preparing citrates and in flavorings and metal polishes. Today, essentially all of the commercial citric acid is produced by surface or submerged fermentation by mold (Aspergillus niger) and submerged fermentation by yeast (Candida guilliermondii, C. Lipolytica), using a variety of substrates including sucrose, molasses, corn syrup, enzyme-treated starch, and normal paraffins.Application:
Used as anticoagulin, chemical reagent, food additive, developer, buffer emulsifying agent, stabilizing agent and used in nonhydrogen electroplation as well as widely in tail gas absorption process of sulfur dioxide for chemical and metallurgy industries. Its absorptivity reaches 99%. The waste absorbed may be regenerated into sulfur dioxide liquid and potassium citrate for cyclic utilization. The daily-use chemical detergent with potassium citrate. As raw material instead of sodium phosphate trimer, it is non-toxic and non-pollution. It also may be used as buffer agent in cosmetic production.
